DV, OV, and EV: what validation level means for your business

Certificate authorities group products into validation levels. The level tells you how deeply the issuer checks your organisation before they approve the certificate.

On the MixSSL shop you can filter products by type and compare brands. Issuance is usually quick—often within about an hour in normal cases, and up to one day in the worst case depending on validation and the brand you choose.

Domain Validation (DV)

The issuer confirms that you control the domain name (for example by adding a DNS record or uploading a small file). DV is the fastest and most affordable option. It is ideal for blogs, brochures, and many small business websites where visitors mainly need encryption and a padlock.

Organization / Business Validation (OV or BV)

The issuer also verifies basic business details. The certificate may show your organisation name. This suits companies that want a bit more trust than DV without the full EV process.

Extended Validation (EV)

The issuer performs a deeper check of your legal business identity. EV certificates are often used by larger brands; issuance can take longer because of the extra paperwork.
